Background
Since April 2023, Sudan's army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for control of the country. The war has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, including famine.
Some of the worst violence has been in Darfur, where the RSF and allied militias have been accused of mass atrocities, and around the city of El Fasher.
Background last updated October 2026.
