Background
The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty, and the two Koreas remain divided by the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone. North Korea has carried out six nuclear tests since 2006 and regularly tests ballistic missiles.
North Korea signed a mutual defence treaty with Russia in 2024 and has sent troops and weapons to support Russia's war against Ukraine. South Korea and the United States hold regular joint military exercises.
Background last updated October 2026.
