Background
Yemen's Houthi movement has controlled the capital Sanaa and much of the north since 2014, and fought a Saudi-led coalition from 2015. From late 2023, the Houthis attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, saying they were acting in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
The attacks led to US and UK strikes on Houthi targets and forced many shipping companies to divert around Africa, disrupting one of the world's most important trade routes between Asia and Europe.
Background last updated October 2026.
