Editor's take

These new F16s give Taiwan stronger electronic-warfare and more networked combat capability at a time when maintaining control of its skies is becoming increasingly critical. Even though the numbers are small compared to the PLA Air force, it makes it harder for China to establish air superiority in a war. Further it also gives a strong signalling in tough times that America is still very much involved in the Indo-Pacific and is willing to support Taiwan defend itself in a wake of war.

1Taiwan welcomes home its first F-16 Block 70 fighters

Following a lengthy wait, Taiwan has received the first pair of the 66 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 70 fighters it had ordered.

Why it matters: The induction of Taiwan’s F-16V Block 70s goes beyond a conventional airpower upgrade, forming part of the wider strategic competition across the Taiwan Strait. The aircraft strengthen Taipei's ability to contest the air domain while reinforcing its defence ties with the United States. It further helps maintaining the cross strait balance which was tilting towards Beijing while enforcing the strong American- Taiwanese defence ties.
